1   Preliminary and Open Champs / What steps do you do for your solo?  on: Jul 14th, 2009, 6:34pm

Hey everyone xxx

I was just wondering what steps you do. Like reel, slipjig, hornpipe, jig, whatever. I do reel and hornpipe. In my school, if you are born in an even year you do slip jig and jig and odd year you do reel and hornpipe. How do you decide what steps you do in your school? Is it like this? are the only combos slip jig and jig + reel and hornpipe or could you do slip jig and hornpipe? and lastly what level are you? im prelim

yahoo! [:

I doubt they would take off, unless you stopped on the middle of the dance or put your arm up or something lol! Just thought of something funny: Someone's dancing and they sneeze and everyone just is silent and the music stops and the judge runs over to you and everyone is like GOD BLESS YOU! ha ha! ya but iv had bad colds during feisianna but i never sneeze on stage!

Your qualified for competitions (feisianna) right now! It may be different in your school, but your teacher should give out a syllabus or entry form that you either fill out and bring to class or mail to the address it says to. I don't know how old you are, but just say your 13 as of January 1st of the current year, then you would sign up for beginner under 14. It's pretty easy to figure out. [: At first, you might only do feisianna that are hosted by your own school. When you start going to other school's feisianna, it gets more competitive and well... it's just better to stick to your own school's feisianna for a year to get used to it. Plus, your more likely to win at your own school's feis, atleast until you get into Prelim and Open Championship.
I suggest you ask your teacher about feisianna so she might give you an entry form! But, just warning you, some schools don't let their dancers compete until higher levels. But either way, it's great that you want to compete and I hope you get to! Competing is a ton of fun!
By tips, did you mean dancing in general tips or feis tips? I'll give you both!
1: Feet should always be turned out. To practice this, stand on some sort of line (for example, the edge of a rug, a piece of tape on the floor, any straight line on the ground) and do skip 1-2-3s and keep both feet turned out on the line. If you didn't understand that just let me know and I will try to better explain.
2: Stand up on your toes! In every dance, not just light jigs, you have to stand on your toes! It always gets the judge's attention in a feis to be REALLY high on your toes! Practice this by going half way up on your toes, and then the highest you can go, and then back down to the ground, and repeat!
3: ALWAYS keep one knee in front of the other. If I was standing directly in front of you while you are dancing, I should only see 1 knee.
~FEIS TIPS~
1: Practice, practice, practice the night before!
2: Have EVERYTHING set up the night before. Do you have your shoes (light and soft), a water bottle, a piece of paper and pen to write your scores on, a card holder, string, bobby pins, safety pins, a wig? (or just curl your hair not even going to get into that! lol!)
3: On the drive to the feis, just speak the words to the step out loud. If you can say the step, I guarentee you can do it! Be positive too!
4: Smile, but not a creepy one! NO: YES: lol but a smile is not necessary! Iv messed up so many times from trying to remember to smile and then messing up! not fun!

Hope this helped! Just reply if you have any questions! Treble on [:

I just got a solo costume in May/June. It's my first solo so I'm pretty excited! I just moved up to Preliminary.
It's sort of coral colored, but the coral changes to pinkish orange-ish as you move on stage. There's black on it too. Its amazing!

Okay, I saw a few people on here have been to competitions before, so here's the deal: I'm a beginner.
I was wondering, how do I know when I'm qualified for competitions, and how do I enter one? Because I really want to compete when I'm ready to!

I love Irish dance

The coolest part is, I'm half Irish--my mom is full Irish except for like, less than a fifth Indian--so when I dance Irish dance, I just feel... well... there's no way to explain it. But it's almost like my soul can tell that it's part of my culture and bloodline.

One way to describe Irish dance:
THE AWESOMEST THING IN THE WORLD.

Okay, I'm a beginner. Today was my second Irish dance class.
I was wondering, how do I know when I'm qualified for competitions, and how do I enter one? Because I really want to compete when I'm ready to!

Also, if you had any tips for me, I would really appreciate them!

Ugh I skipped a year with my school so when i was dancing 3 years everyone else was dancing 4...somehow, I missed learning a step, so in a feis, I was only advanced beginner, but it was treble jig and in treble jig i can only dance to slow music. it turns out that in treble jig beginner you can only dance to fast music!!!!

so i thought i may as well try to do it to the faster music, but my second step was hard, so i ended up just feeling embarrassed and not doing anything at all. it was weird

sorry if this post made absolutly no sense because it didn't make any sense to me when i was writing it, either.
